Totally disinterested A&E staff

April 3, 2025
I was wheeled in by the paramedics, due to a locked up back. I received excellent care from the paramedics. But then was left for 6 hours by the staff as "I had a bad back" I lost all feeling in my lower half and was given some high end pain meds from the doctor after 6hours and told I needed a ec scan as I had an enlarged bladder. Then most ridiculous of all a nurse gave me and a my partner the suppository and walked off, leaving us to administer it ourselves. After several more hours some night shift nurse decided she was going to put me in a wheelchair when I couldn't move, and only then did her job and gave me an ec scan to find I did need a catheter then finally did I receive some care from further nurses on the Amber ward. I get it was busy (it wasn't) but the staff showed no interest at all as 'I had a bad back'

Lack of care

January 22, 2025
An ambulance was called for me while I was in a mental health crisis, after attempting overdosing. When I got out of the ambulance at the hospital I was left sat on a chair in an empty corridor for hours as there was no space, during this time I was passed by multiple members of staff. I was sobbing and threw up nobody asked if I was okay. Finally someone came and got me and I got to sit on a bed. They then asked me about what happened I say I accidentally overdosed on over 30 paracetamol. They put me on a drip and asked no more questions about my mental stability despite me being inconsolable. I was then left alone all night no sheets/blankets, anything. In the morning I was offered a biscuit and taken up to a ward. Same treatment in the ward, completely ignored and had no updates on my health the whole time. When dinner time came they didn’t ask if I had any dietary requirements (I’m vegetarian) and I was given a slice of ham and cheese quiche which I didn’t eat as I don’t eat ham. I started menstruating that evening and asked staff for a sanitary pad. They said they didn’t have any regular pads and gave me an adult nappy to last me for the rest of my stay. This whole time I was in my own clothes which were now soiled from my period. The next morning I just wanted to go home as I had had no sleep and no food the past 24 hours. I asked them when I could be discharged they said they had to take my bloods. About an hour later they took my bloods. This day I was taken into a room and asked a series of questions about my mental health. I answered them (some untruthfully) because I wanted to be discharged asap. I then waited a few hours until the afternoon before I asked again when I would be able to leave. The receptionist then said oh yeah your bloods look okay you can probably go now or if you want you can wait for the doctor to confirm. I said no I’ll just go now. I was given a piece of paper with a list of numbers for the Samaritans and other mental health charities and then I was free to leave. A few weeks later I got a letter informing me I was late picking up a prescription as my bloods had come back as low in potassium. I was never told this and by then it was nearly a month after the event. This was in December 2020 and I am still traumatised by the treatment I received 5 years later.

Various issues and care concerns

May 21, 2024
My father was admitted in October 2023 following a fall at home and an infection.

He had an unwitnessed fall at the end of October 2023 one a ward even after we as a family raised concerns about him that day with staff. The fall resulted in a fractured skull subdural heomotoma and subarachnoid heammorage.

He had another unwitnessed fall on another ward in December 2023 despite warnings about his confused state and warnings that sticking a confused man in a three walled discharge bay could lead to an incident.

Multiple incidents of us raising concerns about him and his care were not put into his notes or communicated with others.

He was finally discharged on discharge to assess at the end of January 2024 and was going to the nursing home the integrated discharge planning team chose a d that we had no say and no choice and could not say no!

The whole saga is still dragging on.

The complaints raised are slow to be responded to and responses are vague.

This is now May 2024 and we now expect our complaints that we began logging in December 2023 to be addressed at the end of June 2024.

A&E treatment

April 8, 2024
I went to a&e as i had fallen and hurt both ankles, my friend had to drive me, we got there and couldn't park so she had to drop me off but i couldn't walk. we ended up getting a member of staff to wheel me to the a&e department. The travel from the drop off point to the a&e department is awful, the path is not level and its not a pleasant experience being pushed on there. When i got in the nurses were brilliant and helpful. The doctor sent me for an x-ray and told me there was nothing on my x-ray and i could leave with crutches. I told him i couldn't weight bare on any foot and he told me to practice and i needed to leave. I ended up being pushed back out on a wheelchair as i couldn't walk. I got home and couldn't believe what they had said about walking on them. I rang my doctor the day after and had a phone call with them, they asked if i had been called by the hospital and i said no why. The doctor told me they could see my x-ray and i had a fracture in one foot and clear damage to the other foot and not to walk on it. I tried ringing a&e back but they wouldnt entertain my concern and just said stay off your feet and start walking when you feel it is right to do so. I feel at Southport Hospital you are rushed in and out without looking at things properly.

More support for carers would be good

October 13, 2023
My relative was in this hospital and I am their carer. I didn't feel as a carer I was supported or being communicated with enough. I struggled alot and I didn't feel the nurses or doctors were very helpful. More support for carers would be good.

very bad experience

April 14, 2023
i had a very bad experience of Southport hospital, i got taken to a&e and was told i needed to be seen by the surgeon before i left. i was told i had to be discharged as there were not enough beds and the surgeon would be in contact.
I got a letter a week later saying that i had discharged myself and i had chosen not to see the surgeon whilst i was there. They then sent me an appointment that i showed up for and i was rudely told there was no appointment and it had been cancelled, but they couldn't tell me who had cancelled it and why it had been cancelled.
I got a phone call from the surgeons secretary who was very rude and unhelpful who said that i had my appointment cancelled and she would book me back in but it would be a long wait. I eventually had to go to my GP in order to talk to the hospital as they wouldn't listen to me.
I was then told i would have to get a blood test so i showed up and i was then told that it hadn't been booked in and they didn't have my blood form so i had to ring another number in order to sort my bloods before i could see the surgeon.

A&E

September 6, 2016
One group member commented about Southport & Formby District General Hospital.
They said they had to wait five hours to be seen in A&E with a long wait in the
corridor. When discharged they were unhappy, as they had not got a diagnosis but
were sent home.
