I am concerned about digital exclusion

January 21, 2025
I am concerned about how a large number of GP Practices seem to be moving towards getting their patients to do everything online or over an app at my practice, it seems that is the way they are going with no option for people to use a phone to make appointments or enquries. For people like me I am ok, I find it concerning where our information will go and whether it is actually of benefit to people. There are people who are not as fortunate as I am and might struggle with using methods like this to be triaged at their surgery.
The care I receive is always good but it just bothers me how we are meant to make contact as things go more digital.

communication with patients

we have to get an appointment online via the triage system now which isnt accessible to all patients. my relative got diagnosed with dementia around 3-4 years ago now and i have to ring the surgery for reviews on their medication. you'd think they would ring me and book in a review. they have been taken off medication due to a recent hospital trip and they need to go back on it but they havent reviewed them yet. shouldnt all patients who have a diagnosis get a yearly review anyway?

i find the admin and reception staff quite rude at times, when you go to reception they don't acknowledge you and continue doing what they are doing. The doctors are very good but as its a training practice the care isn't always brilliant. test results are inconsistent and i would rather speak with a doctor about results rather than admin or reception staff. I've had to fight to see a doctor for my results and i can only get a telephone. i cant fault the doctor i spoke with but surely test results should be fed back via the doctor not admin.

Hard to get an appointment

They haven't opened up face to face appointments at this doctors surgery since covid and I think they need to go with the patients and open up appointments again. I haven't seen my doctor for 4 years now face to face. I feel I have to be extremely ill before they will see me.

not brilliant

My relative had concerns over her health, the doctor wouldn't see her and when he did eventually see her he told her it was down to her age. I had to go with her to get a blood test, we couldn't book the blood test for another 2 weeks and we weren't allowed to go to hospital for the blood test. The blood test showed cancer and only then did the doctor believe us.
They have told us we can book appointments via mobile or app but she cant use either of them so its unfair to people who don't use technology. I also put power of attorney in at the doctors surgery to ring me and not her as she is hard of hearing and they still ring her.
