Original feedback for

Royal Preston Hospital

A good experience spoiled by senior nurse

Richard was admitted to hospital 13 days ago. The ambulance service was spot on, thank you. ED at Royal Preston hospital was great, resus staff were amazing On the ward 18, the nursing staff were efficient, friendly and professional, the HCA s were good. The ward sister was in my mind defensive and not able to take any responsibility for her ward, her team and the ancillary staff. Whenever I asked a question she was abrupt, and brusque.. For example.. Richard was having his observations done when I arrived to be told he was being discharged. He was saturated with urine.. His pants. His bedding he was soaked when I queried how he could be ready for discharge the HCA told me she'd offered to wash him but she hadn't realised he was soaking wet. I dealt with him and then the sister (her name is [redacted for privacy]) came in to deal with another patient in the bay. When she was finished and was washing her hands I asked if I could have a word with her "yes", she said stood where she was. I had to ask her to one to me to talk. When I questioned Richards readiness to come home she started to explain to me but decided to call in someone to explain the situation. He obviously found the situation difficult and I accepted his explanation. Later on I left the bay to find someone to tell me why some of Richards meds not opened, had he not been having them. I found [redacted for privacy] (admittedly busy at a computer terminal) and asked her. She was, again, defensive and not answering coherently. A staff nurse approached and asked [redacted for privacy] if she could speak with me. That staff nurse was amazing... Calm, clear and very empathetic. She explained satisfactorily why the meds had not been opened. I was angry, upset and perhaps not listening properly to [redacted for privacy] but on two occasions the person in charge on my opinion, passed the buck. Why is she in that position? I am amazed that thy e ward runs as smoothly as it does. It almost as of they do well in spite of her leadership rather t an because of her leadership
