Investigating healthcare in prison

June 29, 2023

Over the past few months, several members of the community have spoken to us about their experiences of healthcare in prison. In response, we have started to investigate this further to get a clearer understanding of access to healthcare in prison. We have met with various advocacy and support groups who work with those currently incarcerated or recently released to hear about their experiences.

We have also attended several health and wellbeing events at HMP Kirkham Prison to gather feedback. We heard positive feedback about health services, as well as concerns around waiting times for treatment and the need for more mental health support for veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

On 25 June, Sue our Senior Engagement Officer, attended a Veterans Breakfast Club; a support group in HMP Kirkham for veterans who are currently inmates. Sue listened to the issues they face when being remanded and sentenced, and how this impacts on both their physical and mental health. Again, feedback emerged about the lack of mental health support for veterans with PTSD.

Feedback we have received from listening to inmates’ experiences has been provided to the HMP Kirkham healthcare provider, Spectrum. We will be working with Spectrum going forward, sharing feedback with them to help drive improvements.

In the next few months, we will be deepening our relationships with prison healthcare providers and those currently serving time, or newly released, in order to be able to offer valuable feedback wherever possible, and help ensure services meet the needs of those using them.
