Health and Wellbeing services speak to the residents of Hornby

September 21, 2023

Why did we run the event?

Through engagement of the local community around the Lancaster district, several people stated that they live in rural areas and accessing services means that they have to travel into the city. This can be challenging for those with mobility issues, on low income and/or working full time; and whilst there is public transport from the outlining villages it can be infrequent, time consuming and potentially costly for those on a low income.

Listening to this feedback, Healthwatch Lancashire decided to take services direct to the community and to see whether this would be of benefit to the local community in order to increase health and wellbeing as well as making services more accessible.

The event:

On Wednesday 6 September 2023, Healthwatch Lancashire held a health and wellbeing event in Hornby, Lancaster, in partnership with Hornby Village Institute. There were lots of different organisations present to offer advice and support, including Age UK, Citizens Advice North Lancashire, The British Liver Trust, North Lancashire and South Cumbria Breast Screening Service, Children and Young People Services, Lancashire Carers, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Fire, and many more. Blood pressure checks were available, along with lovely hand massages by Karma Hemplife.

Being able to just bob in and get lots of support and advice was really welcomed by the local community, and feedback on the day was of appreciation for having access to services they may not have been able to easily reach or even be aware of but for the event.

What next?

Following on from this we are looking to organise more health and wellbeing events throughout Lancashire to continue making services more accessible for local communities.

We would like to thank everyone who was involved in the event, and a special thanks to Hornby Village Institute for opening their doors and making everyone feel welcome.
