Healthwatch Lancashire ran an engagement project to explore the experiences of the Deaf community who use British Sign Language (BSL) when accessing health and social care services. Feedback was gathered from 149 people through focus groups, case studies and an online survey. A mystery shopping activity was also conducted. This report details our findings.

An accessible BSL version of this report is available here.

This piece of work has been a tremendous success in highlighting some of the barriers that members of the Deaf community face accessing services. We have put together a comprehensive report that outlines some of the issues faced along with recommendations aimed at removing barriers to services and improving the training staff receive about Deaf people and ways to support them.

Below we have also provided our Summary Report – Our Voice in Health and Social Care.
