This report details the findings of our project exploring to understand the experiences of family members and carers who support people with a neurological disorder. Engagement for the project took place between March and April 2024 with the support of local partner organisations.
The feedback outlined in this report identified some of the barriers carers face and outlined a series of recommendations to which local commissioning bodies have provided their response.
We spoke with 124 unpaid carers supporting someone with a neurological condition. We attended 25 community groups and conducted 27 case studies. 80% of carers in our study were registered as a carer with their GP. However, only 39% had received a carer’s assessment.
In this report, we identified some main themes including issues related to information about diagnosis and a lack of knowledge about available support. Some of the main barriers when it came to accessing appropriate support were:
- Some carers were not offered any support, which meant they did not know what was available.
- We found some carers expressed a lack of clear guidance or a need for clearer guidance on supporting those with neurological conditions.
These findings have helped to formulate recommendations for the attention of Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board and Lancashire County Council to help improve access and awareness of support that is available to carers.
