Waiting for Wellness: Phase 2

This month, we published our latest report ‘Waiting for Wellness’ which explored people’s experiences of mental health and accessing support in Lancashire. This was in response to hearing an increased amount of feedback during 2022/23 about mental health and the barriers faced when trying to access mental health support. 

One of the main findings from this report were the barriers faced by young people in accessing mental health support. As a result we made the following recommendations for the attention of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board, who commission mental health services in Lancashire:

Produce campaigns aimed at young people addressing the concerns raised in this report including:

  1.  Reduce stigma of mental health
  2. Raise awareness of different forms of mental health support
  3. Information about when the NHS have a duty to inform parent/carers about a young person’s mental health
  4. The pathway from CAMHS to adult mental health services.

Healthwatch Lancashire have now launched a second phase of this project, to explore in more detail, the experiences of young people’s mental health and accessing mental health support. We also want to hear from parents and/or carers about their experiences. 

We will be attending a range of pop-up events at colleges and youth zones across Lancashire, as well as connecting with our community contacts who work with young people to share the survey and give people the chance to have their say.

Our first phase of this project has already had impact, with service providers and commissioners acknowledging our findings and informing us of their plans to improve their services. We need your views to help influence improvements for young people’s mental health services.
