Residents invited to help with Advance Care Planning booklet

Local residents across Blackburn with Darwen and East Lancashire are invited to help health commissioners develop a patient-friendly Advance Care Planning booklet.

Advance care planning is about doing what you can do to ensure that any future health care treatment you may receive is consistent with your wishes and preferences should you be unable to make your own decisions or speak for yourself.

Dr Mike Ions, Chief Clinical Officer at NHS East Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Advance care planning can help avoid a patient suffering unnecessarily and improve their quality of life.  An advance care plan can be used at any stage of life and can be updated as and when circumstances change.  They can be developed at any time, whether you are ill or well.”

Dr Chris Clayton, Clinical Chief Officer at NHS Blackburn with Darwen CCG, added: “We would like to produce a booklet that provides information to help people who may benefit from thinking about and planning for their future care and treatment.  A discussion around plans and wishes for end of life care is not always an easy one to have and so we would really welcome your views and input to create this booklet.  We want to ensure that it is easy to complete, useful and sensitive to people’s circumstances.”

Gill Brown, Chief Executive at Healthwatch Lancashire, commented: “Healthwatch Lancashire welcomes that views and opinions of residents are being considered in the development of this booklet and I am sure the results will be positive as a result.”

A number of very informal focus groups are running across the districts to look at the creation of an Advance Care Planning booklet.  These are as follows:

  • Tuesday 6 January, 1pm to 3pm, Walshaw House, Regent Street, Nelson BB9 8AS
  • Thursday 8 January, 10am to 12pm, Accrington PALS Primary Health Care Centre, Paradise Street, Accrington BB5 2EJ
  • Monday 12 January, 10am to 12pm, Blackburn Central Library, Town Hall Street, Blackburn BB2 1AG
  • Wednesday 14 January, 1pm to 3pm, Darwen Health Centre, James Street West, Darwen BB3 1PY
