Morecambe Bay Investigation

Healthwatch Lancashire extends our deepest sympathy to the patients and the families affected by the dreadful failings of care by the maternity unit at Furness General Hospital.

The Kirkup Report is a comprehensive report and its findings are not just aimed at the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMB) but also for the other NHS hospitals, NHS regulators, national bodies and the wider NHS. The report reinforces the absolutely critical importance for the NHS to focus on quality of care, learning by NHS boards, clinicians, other staff and also the importance of robust governance.

UHMB now has a new leadership team and much has changed since the period investigated. – January 2004 to June 2013. The new leadership team is focused on developing a culture of transparency and openness and is focusing on delivering consistently high quality care, listening to patients and families and supporting their staff’s learning and development.

Healthwatch Lancashire is currently working with UHMB, helping to improve services by gathering information by talking to patients and recording their journeys as they undergo their treatment and care.
