Volunteers support 10 trusts and independent organisations in their annual PLACE assessments

Patient-led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) help organisations understand how well they are meeting the needs of their patients and identify where improvements can be made.

Healthwatch Lancashire’s volunteers have supported ten trusts and independent organisations by taking part in 35 days of PLACE assessments this year and the results have now been published by Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC), the organisation responsible for ensuring all health settings conduct the assessments.

PLACE assessments are undertaken annually across all hospitals, hospices and independent treatment centres proving NHS funded care across the UK.

Information from the Patient Assessors involved is used to inform how well each organisation and site is performing in terms of national standards and against other similar organisations and sites.

The assessments look at: cleanliness; condition, appearance and maintenance; privacy, dignity and wellbeing; dementia; food and, new for 2016, disability.

All Healthwatch Lancashire volunteers and staff are required to undergo PLACE training which was held at the Healthwatch Lancashire offices on 30th March.

Ten Healthwatch Lancashire volunteers and four staff, alongside hospital trust personnel, took part in the 35 days of PLACE assessments across 26 sites from 15th March to 27th May 2016.

Sheralee Turner-Birchall, Healthwatch Lancashire Chief Officer, said: “The time our volunteers were able to commit to supporting PLACE assessments in Lancashire this year is remarkable.

“This really demonstrates how Healthwatch Lancashire’s dedicated volunteers are able to make a valuable contribution in helping to scrutinise hospital environments to assess the quality of non-clinical services and the condition of buildings.”

The results for 2016’s Patient-led Assessments of the Care Environment were published on the Health and Social Care Information Centre website on the 10th August and are below for the organisations in Lancashire:
