Good environments matter but don’t just happen. Patient-led Assessments of the Care Environment help organisations understand how well they are meeting the needs of their patients and identify where improvements can be made.
Healthwatch Lancashire’s volunteers have supported ten trusts and independent organisations by taking part in 38 days of Patient-led Assessments of the Care Environment assessments this year and the results have now been published by Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC), the organisation responsible for ensuring all health settings conduct the assessments.
Patient-led Assessments of the Care Environment are undertaken annually across all hospitals, hospices and independent treatment centres proving NHS funded care across the UK. Information from the Patient Assessors involved is used to inform how well each organisation and site is performing in terms of national standards and against other similar organisations and sites.
The assessments look at:
- how clean the environments are;
- the condition, appearance and maintenance – inside and outside
- quality and availability of food and drinks
- how well the environment protects people’s privacy and dignity
- how the environment supports the care of people with Dementia (new in 2015)
Graham Jacob, Section Head of the HSCIC, delivered the Patient-led Assessments of the Care Environment Training to Healthwatch Lancashire staff and volunteers in February 2015, which is mandatory for all Patient Assessors. Healthwatch Lancashire currently has more than 25 trained volunteers and staff.
In preparation for the 2015 assessments, Healthwatch Lancashire made contact with all hospital trusts within Lancashire to inform each organisation of the requirements as outlined in the NHS England Patient-led Assessments of the Care Environment Guidance, which states: ‘The first route to identify patient representation should always be through local Healthwatch, who have the right to join any PLACE assessments. In addition to local Healthwatch, or where they decline to be involved, organisations may need to recruit additional patient assessors’.
This resulted in Healthwatch Lancashire supporting ten trusts and independent organisations in their annual PLACE assessments.
Healthwatch Lancashire volunteers and staff took part in 38 days of PLACE assessments across 29 sites and from July 2015, Healthwatch Lancashire has committed its staff and volunteers to supporting organisations with their programme of Mini PLACE, as a way of ‘following up’ their action plans, created as a result of the annual PLACE assessment.
