No ambulance for Priority 1 call

January 8, 2024
After having chest pains we called an ambulance. We were told that it was priority 1, but none arrived 1.5 hours later. We cancelled it, and got help elsewhere. I'm worried that lives are at risk here. The service (to me) doesn't seem fit for purpose. Clearly I don't need them all the time (this is the first time ever I've needed an ambulance), but in the one time where I'm needing it, it just doesn't happen.

May 26, 2023
An elderly lady fell down and was trapped her leg, called for an ambulance and waited for 3 hours, no ambulance arrived and when called back was told to take her in by car. She now has a spinal injury from this and has had to go into a care home.

Long wait and wrong catergory

May 26, 2023
Ambulance called for an elderly relative with an emergency aneurysm, wrong level of category provided by ambulance service, waited 4 hours and relative died shortly afterwards. Called for an ambulance for another elderly relative who had slipped on ice and had serious shoulder injury, no ambulance turned up, ended up taking to hospital by car

Paramedics

August 31, 2016
A 19-year-old Male shared their experience from Royal Preston Hospital/ Lancashire Ambulance Service:
The young person was suffering from a severe throat infection which was restricting his breathing and he was coughing up blood. His girlfriend called for an ambulance and the paramedics arrived.
After the paramedics checked him the young person felt that the paramedics were rude to him and did not take his symptoms seriously. He was very distressed by this situation.
The paramedics repeatedly asked him to breathe when he had explained that he could not breath. He was vomiting blood and at no point was he offered a sick bowl. Rather than talking to him the paramedics were talking to each other about what they were going to have for breakfast. The paramedics did not support the young person down the stairs from a first floor flat despite telling them he was feeling very dizzy.
The young person did state that the nurse was very good and the doctor was excellent at the hospital who treated him.

Fall at at home

February 29, 2016
was on11/02/16, after my fall the ambulance was called, they arrived on time, the crew that came were called Angie and Michelle, I was lying on the floor unable to move with pain, they examined me carefully and helped me with my pain.
After that they skilfully helped me in the ambulance, they settled me in the position and during all the journey Angie helped me and protected my shoulder all way to the hospital.
She talked to me all the way and kept my spirits up as she knew I was in pain.
Throughout the journey both staff were amazing.
The A&E at Oldham Hospital were amazing.
After surgery and stay at the hospital was brought back home, Colin and staff were really good.

Patient transport never arrived

August 21, 2015
My mother had to wait over 2 hours for patient transport, as they were struggling they sent an alternative taxi but care home sent it back as it was not suitable due to wheelchair access. This is not good and needs to be looked at. Vital treatment was missed and now have to wait for another appointment.

Poor Ambulance Transport Criteria System

April 1, 2015
I live alone and am 86 years of age. I am asthmatic and diabetic. My family live away from me. I attend Royal Blackburn Hospital every 6 months for a one night stay. I do not think it is sensible to make me go through the disability criteria every time I phone up for the ambulance transport. I feel that since I am 86 years old, if I was eligible one time, my age must show that I am unlikely to become well enough to make it to the hospital by myself. Having said that, I have always been offered an ambulance once I have passed the criteria, but the last time, I was told that that I am not eligible; although after persuasion I was given it. I do not want or think I should have to go through this every 6 months. It also increases anxiety about going into hospital.

Mother in law had a fall at her care home

March 16, 2015
My mother in law had a fall and broke her hip, the ambulance was called and they arrived after almost 2 hours. All this time she lay lying on the floor.
I raised this as a complaint but still not heard anything back.
